Life often begins outside of human choice. No one can determine where, how, or under what conditions they will be born. Some of us are born into wealthy families, while others come into the world amidst challenging hardships. Some babies open their eyes with a healthy body, while others begin their life struggle with physical disabilities. It is precisely at this point that we face the reality that humans come into the world not only with a physical but also a spiritual inheritance.
Many people believe that psychological problems arise solely from experienced pain, trauma, or adverse life conditions. This is certainly true, but it’s an incomplete truth. Because psychological distress is not only acquired later in life. Sometimes these problems, much like eye color, hair texture, or a genetic disease, come with birth. Like a silent, unseen, yet impactful inheritance…
This inheritance can manifest itself in a child’s behavior even as they take their first steps, in their way of perceiving the world, or in the bonds they form with people. Some children may be introverted, anxious, or obsessive. Others may struggle to adapt to their environment. Of course, not every difference is a problem, but when some differences deepen, they can turn into a picture that makes life difficult.
This situation is neither a deficiency nor a flaw. Just as an individual can be born with congenital diabetes or a heart condition, some individuals are born with a spiritual sensitivity, or sometimes even a heavy psychological burden. Many conditions such as predisposition to depression, bipolar disorder, attention deficit, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive disorder have been scientifically linked to genetic predispositions. When family history is examined, many individuals experiencing psychological problems are found to have similar issues in their maternal or paternal lineage.
Understanding this fact is important not for labeling or judging individuals, but rather for knowing them better and being able to support them. Because sometimes a person cannot make sense of why they are anxious, why they constantly feel unhappy, or why they feel alienated from their surroundings. They might perceive this state they cannot escape as a “personal weakness.” However, this situation could be a spiritual predisposition they were born with.
So, what does being aware of this situation change?
First and foremost, awareness breeds empathy. Knowing that a child’s or an adult’s behavior is shaped not only by external conditions but also by an internal structure leads us from judgment to understanding. Furthermore, for the individual themselves, this awareness brings acceptance instead of shame or guilt, followed by the search for solutions. For no inherited burden is unbearable. A problem stemming from a spiritual inheritance can be balanced with the right support, love, and scientific approaches. Just as vision impairment can be corrected with suitable glasses, psychological disorders can also be managed with appropriate methods.
Life may not be equal at the starting lines. But this does not mean the finish line will also be different. Some build their lives on a spiritually strong foundation, while others try to rise on fragile ground. However, every person has the chance to discover their inner potential. And sometimes, the greatest resilience sprouts from beneath the deepest wounds.
It should not be forgotten that awareness regarding mental health indicates the development not only of the individual but also of society. Ignoring the silent inheritance of the soul only deepens the individual’s suffering. But recognizing, accepting, and supporting this inheritance allows both the individual and society to move towards a healthier future.
Perhaps we weren’t born rich, healthy, or strong from the start… But each of us can learn to make peace with our soul and make the best of what we have. Because the inheritance of the soul is not so much an end, but the herald of a new beginning.
